Boerne Independent School District (BISD) stands tall as one of only 31 districts out of over 1,200 in Texas to maintain an A-rating from the Texas Education Agency every year since the state's accountability system began. Rich Sena, the Board Secretary and a dedicated member of the Boerne ISD community, speaks passionately about the district's standards. "We don't like the idea of being a B-rated district," he asserts. "We're an A-rated district, and we have been every year since the rating system began. Standards are not what we state. They're what we accept." This commitment to high standards is evident across all 13 campuses, reflecting a community-wide dedication to education.

Thriving Despite Financial Constraints

What makes Boerne ISD's accomplishments even more notable is the financial landscape in which they were achieved. Operating with approximately $3,000 less per student than the average Texas school district, Boerne ISD spends about $10,000 per student, a stark contrast to local private schools charging between $18,000 and $30,000. Yet, the district thrives, graduating students at a 95 percent rate of College, Career, or Military Readiness, far surpassing the state average of 82 percent.

Sena highlights the district's efficiency in managing resources. "We have to be efficient, and we're used to doing more with less," he explains. By identifying $1.5 million in efficiencies and cuts in administrative overhead, the district could allocate more resources directly to classrooms, ensuring a focus on its mission of educating children. Such financial discipline is mirrored in the district's consistent receipt of the Texas Financial Integrity Rating System's Superior rating for 15 consecutive years.

A Community United in Mission

As Boerne ISD continues to grow, with enrollment rising from 7,200 to over 11,200 since Sena joined the board in 2014, the district has maintained its academic quality through deliberate investments in teachers and leadership. Sena emphasizes the importance of governance and community support, noting, "It starts with a supportive community, people that believe in the value of education. We have that here in Boerne." This shared belief in education has facilitated initiatives like the successful voter-backed wage increases for district workers and teachers, affirming the community's commitment to its educators.

As the May 2 school board election approaches, Sena, alongside Board President Kristi Schmidt, seeks re-election on a platform of academic excellence and fiscal responsibility, aiming to preserve Boerne's cherished Hill Country values.
